SAACHA & ROXY - MEANT TO BE
After Roxy was spotted wandering around Crockett Park in Cedar Hill in early May, the staff at Tri-City Animal Shelter felt certain that the gentle, playful Doberman must belong to someone, even though she had no tags, no microchip and no collar. When no one came forward to claim her, and searches came up empty, they called the local Doberman rescue. The organization said they were too full to take any more dogs. So Roxy stayed at the shelter.
And stayed… and stayed. Time after time, she was passed up for adoption. Facebook users scrolled past her photo.
But Tonya Sulrzycki knows why no one was interested: “Because she was meant to be with me.”
Tonya and her husband live on an acre of land in Midlothian. They already had one Doberman named Saacha, who needed a playmate. One day in late June, Tonya’s husband said, “Hey—I think I found a dog for you at the shelter in Cedar Hill.” He had seen a post about Roxy. Tonya looked at the photo and immediately knew Roxy would be hers.
She sent an email asking about Roxy, and even though it was a Saturday, shelter director Tammy Miller answered immediately. When Tonya and her husband got to the shelter early the next week, the front desk was busy dealing with other people. As the couple waited, they walked down the corridor and found Roxy’s kennel. “We looked at Roxy, and then looked at each other, and were like ‘Oh yeah.’”
They filled out the paperwork and brought her home. “She fits in like she’s been here her entire life,” said Tonya. Roxy and Saacha run around the vast yard chasing tennis balls and playing I-chase-you/you-chase-me. At night, Roxy sleeps beside Saacha as if they’ve always been together. “She has a great life,” Tonya said, “and people who love her very much.”
